Journey of Odia music

 Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra

Recorded songs from the first decade of the 20th century (1900–1910) are extremely rare, but archival efforts have identified several key shellac 78 RPM records from this period.
The earliest known recorded Odia songs include:
  • Asuchanti Brajabasi (1906): Sung by Seikh Khan Mohammad, this is widely cited as the first recorded Odia song.
  • Taaranagati Ki Karanu (1906): Also sung by Seikh Khan Mohammad, this was recorded in Calcutta (now Kolkata) by William Conrad Gaisberg for the Gramophone Concert Record label in March or April 1906.
  • Hasi Hasi Naba Chhailare (1909): A vintage recording performed by Kumudini.
  • Rasikaa Jane Eka (1909): Recorded by Lokenath Kanungo.
  • Maana Kara Naa (1909): Another recording by Lokenath Kanungo.
  • Prana Sanginire (1909): A devotional or classical piece by Lokenath Kanungo.
  • Jamuna Kule Kaaliya (1909): A melody recorded by Basu Deb Mahapatra during this same early era of the Gramophone Company's regional expansion.
These songs were primarily devotional or classical in nature, reflecting the dominant musical forms of the time before the advent of film music in the 1930s.

Akshaya Mohanty's non-film discography is vast, encompassing modern romantic songs (Adhunika), revolutionary ballads, devotional tracks (Bhajans), and even Ghazals.
Early Phase (1950s–1960s): The Rise of Adhunika
During this era, Mohanty broke away from traditional classical structures to introduce a contemporary Odia sound.
  • 1950s: Recorded his first song, "Gadiala Bhai Dharichhi Sura Re".
  • 1960s: Published several compilations of his lyrics, which would later be recorded as non-film hits, including Ei Katha Rahila (1962) and Geeti (1968).
Ballad and Narrative Phase (1970s)
Mohanty pioneered a unique "cult of ballads" in Odia music based on regional legends and social commentary.
  • 1972: Released "Songs from the Land of Jagannath", featuring traditional devotional themes.
  • 1973: Recorded iconic non-film hits such as "Chandramallika Hase" and "Smruti Tume".
  • 1974: Released the romantic album "All About Love - Akshaya Style".
  • 1976: Released "Bhajans of Bhima Bhoi", exploring the spiritual works of the saint-poet.
  • Famous Ballads: Recorded narrative songs like "Kanchi Abhijana""Randipua Ananta", and "Konaraka Gatha" during this decade.
The Ghazal and Maturity Phase (1980s–1990s)
In this period, his work became more philosophical and technically experimental.
  • 1981: Released the album "Oriya Adhunik Geeta".
  • 1983: Released the "Akhaya Mohanty Roupya Jayantee - 1" (Silver Jubilee) album.
  • 1984: Released "Kalankita Nayaka" (Disgraced Protagonist), the first-ever Odia album officially categorized as a Ghazal album.
  • 1985: Released a major collection of "Oriya Modern Songs" through Saregama.
  • 1990s: Continued to release modern singles like "He Phaguna Tume" (1995), which remains one of his most popular romantic tracks.
Legacy and Posthumous Releases
  • 1999: Released the single "Orissa Steelers".
  • 2000s–Present: Major labels continue to release remastered collections, such as "Modern Oriya Songs" (2006) and "All Time Greats" (various years), ensuring his non-film work remains digitally accessible.
